On this week’s edition of the Gadget Lab Podcast, the gang talks about the latest news from Cupertino and Redmond, checks out Midi Fighter 3D, and shows off the Lytro camera.
First up, reviews editor Michael Calore and staff writer Christina Bonnington chat about Apple’s product event scheduled for March 7. Although there’s a bit of debate about the device pictured in the e-mail invite, we’re pretty sure it’s an iPad. We’ll be live-blogging next week’s event, so be sure to visit Gadget Lab for our up-to-the-minute coverage.
Next, Michael and Christina talk about the newest desktop OS on the block, Windows 8. After having close to a week of hands-on time with a tablet running Windows 8, we can say it’s a truly unique experience. The live tile-based Metro interface, borrowed from Windows Phone 7, is the biggest reason for that (and it’s definitely a good thing).
Michael then chats with special guest Ean Golden from DJ TechTools about the Midi Fighter 3D, a midi controller that lets you control electronic music in 3D space. You can pick it up to control whatever you want just by moving the device, instead of using analog faders and such — it’s got a gyro, an accelerometer, and a compass to give you complete control just by moving the device in your hands. Golden then shows us a more traditional looking DJ setup called the VCI 400 Ean Golden edition, a very portable turntable mixer.
To finish up, senior editor John Bradley joins Michael to show off the Lytro light field camera, which just began shipping to customers this week. It’s different from normal cameras because instead of capturing light in a single plane of space, it captures all of the light in a three-dimensional scene. Because of that, you don’t really have to worry about focusing your shot — you can focus a photo after the fact using Lytro’s Mac software.

“They’ve been caught flat-footed,” said Jean-Louis Gassée, a former Apple executive, the former chairman of Palm’s software spinoff and a partner at Allegis Capital in Palo Alto, Calif. “They’ve built a tremendous company; they are people with distinguished backgrounds. They are not idiots, but they’ve behaved like idiots.”
Of course, most everyone, when challenged at a conscious level, will correct this mistake, and agree that no, Google only aggregates, it doesn’t think, that the Internet is just a compilation of human endeavors. But how often do you hear someone say something like “ask Google”, “Wikipedia says”, “Facebook told me…”? Before the Internet, there was no tool with which people interacted linguistically.
